No to Mining in Palawan Signature Campaign
A signature campaign was started on February 3rd, 2011 against mining activities in Palawan, one of the strongholds of biodiversity in the Philippines. The Save Palawan Movement aims to gather 10 million signatures and is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Gerardo “Doc Gerry” Ortega, a wildlife veterenarian, radio broadcaster and environmentalist whose murder early this year may have been related to his outspoken crusade against the industry because of the environmental damage it causes.
“We jail people for killing one or two persons. How about institutions or people that ravage the environment and cause the death of hundreds or thousands? The floods of Palawan are absolutely due to mining – due to the denudation of forests.” – Doc Gerry Ortega
